The oil palm tree is the world's most productive source of vegetable fat. On a global scale, palm oil is the most widely produced vegetable fat. Palm oil is extracted from the oil palm fruit. Unsustainable production of palm oil is a threat to the rainforests of South-East Asia and it is the single most significant cause of deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia. RSPO, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, is an organisation that promotes the sustainable production of palm oil. The membership of the organisation consists of producers, processors, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, investors and environmental and other NGOs. The organisation has developed a set of criteria to cover the social, ecological and economic requirements of sustainable palm oil production. The palm oil producers who comply with these criteria can apply for an RSPO certificate for their palm oil. The certificate guarantees for example that precious rainforests are not cut down for plantation purposes and that greenhouse gas emissions are being reduced. Mildola uses palm oil in the production of deep frying oil products. Palm oil is an important ingredient that enhances the frying properties of oil. Mildola acquires its palm oil from suppliers who are members of RSPO. Mildola is committed to scheduled, sustainable sourcing of RSPO certified palm oil and to complying with the principles and criteria of RSPO. Mildola is committed to acquiring all of its palm oil from 100% RSPO certified sources at the latest by the year 2012.
